If people were actually decent, could anarchy work?

i read somewhere that during world war 1 there was an area in ukraine and they overthrew the government and created some sort of anarchy, it wasn't total anarchy but it was like you help me and ill help you, and they created jobs for eachother but there was no currency and everything was either free or up for trade, but there was no law, except you help me and ill help you and if you harm me well harm you. so if people were actually decent, could this work for america, if not, please explain
